KAELA DORE
Upon completion of her law degree, Kaela Dore knew that she wanted to dedicate herself to the legal profession. Her early career, primarily spent working in country practices, has been an incredible journey, providing her with the opportunity to represent a diverse array of clients facing various legal issues. This broad background has cultivated a diverse knowledge base in Kaela, which proves particularly useful in handling family law cases, a field where crossovers into other areas of law are common. While Kaela's primary focus and expertise lie in family law, she is equally passionate about migration law, wills and estates, and criminal law. Her experience extends to handling a wide range of criminal matters, including summary offences, minor indictable and major indictable offences, ensuring clients receive dedicated and skilled representation across all areas of her practice.
As an active member of the Law Society of South Australia, Kaela provided recent contributions to the Family Law Committee and the Children and the Family Law Committee. Additionally, Kaela has made ongoing contributions to the South Australian Law Reform Institute (SALRI). Her work with SALRI involves regular input to SALRI’s consultations. SALRI’s reports provide informed recommendations for law reform, and Kaela's active involvement in this process helps play a significant role in shaping the future of the legal system in South Australia.
Kaela was appointed as a Deputy Registrar in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia in 2021, a recognition of her legal expertise in Family Law. This significant role involved not only determining Applications for Consent Order and overseeing weekly Divorce Lists, but also mediating disputes and facilitating negotiations in family law matters.
As a Registrar, Kaela was entrusted with a range of judicial powers. Including making divorce Orders in undefended proceedings, approving parenting and financial Orders by consent, making procedural and case management Orders, and even dispensing with the requirements of service. She was also tasked with conducting Divorce hearings, considering Applications for Consent Orders, conducting internal dispute resolution events, and reviewing applications for urgency.
This experience has provided Kaela with a deep understanding of the inner workings of the court system. It has honed her ability to navigate complex court procedures and allowed her to gain unique insights into decision-making processes that directly benefit her clients in family law matters. Her background as a Registrar equips her with a valuable perspective that she brings to bear in every case she handles.
With an expanding practice in criminal law, Kaela focuses on a variety of matters in the District Court and Magistrates Court, including drug-related and sexual offences, assaults, and other offences against the person. Although not her primary area of practice currently, Kaela is passionate about expanding her knowledge and services in criminal law.
Kaela's approach to all legal matters is characterised by a commitment to helping clients reach pragmatic and sensible solutions. She believes in customising her approach based on the unique needs of each case and client. As a diligent mediator and negotiator, she prioritises helping clients avoid the need for costly and lengthy court proceedings whenever possible.
